Statistics
Despite the significant milestones attained in the anti-violence movement
over the past several decades, sexual violence continues to permeate our
communities with alarming frequency. Below are some statistics on sexual
violence.
Global Statistics on Sexual
Violence
- Violence against women is one of the four major causes of death in the
world today along with disease, hunger and war, according to a major study by
the World Health Organization entitled "Women in an Insecure World."
- The World Health Organization estimates that globally one woman in five
will during her lifetime be the subject of rape or attempted rape, and one in
three will be the victim of violence. That means 700 million women have been
or will be raped during their lifetime, including 25 million in the United
States.
- Globally, women aged between 15 and 44 are more likely to be injured or
die as a result of male violence than through cancer, traffic accidents,
malaria and war combined. (World Health Organization, "Women in an Insecure
World")
National Statistics on Sexual
Assault
- One out of every six American women has been the victim of an attempted or
completed rape in their lifetimes. A total of 17.7 million women have been
victims of these crimes.

victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault.
- In 2003, one in every ten rape victims were male.
- While about 80% of all victims are white, minorities are more likely to be
attacked. African Americans are sexually assaulted at rates 3 times higher
than whites.
- Offenders will sexually abuse one in three girls and one in six boys
before the victim reaches the age of 18.
- The rate of abuse of girls with disabilities is four times that of the
national average.
- Only about 6% of rapes involved the use of a weapon. 80% of victims
reported the use of physical force.

their assailant.
